Rabies Alert for South Orange County!

The SCVMA (Southern California Veterinary Medical Association) has issued a Rabies alert for south Orange County.

Laguna Beach Animal Services reported a cat recently killing a bat, where the  bat tested positive for Rabies.

The cat was not up to date on his Rabies vaccination.  Because of this, the cat must now be placed in quarantine for 6 months.  Had the Rabies vaccination been up to date, the cat would only be quarantined for 1 month.  The cat’s owner is also going through post rabies exposure treatment.

The SCVMA is encouraging all pet owners to make sure that your pets are up to date on their Rabies vaccinations.  Although many people don’t realize it, there are many local cases of Rabies in wild animals.  Rabies vaccinations are safe and effective.

Protect your pets by verifying that their Rabies vaccinations are up to date.  Puppies and kittens receive their first Rabies vaccination at four months old.  That first Rabies vaccination lasts for one year.  After that, the Rabies vaccination is boosted every three years.  If you think your pet may not be up to date with their Rabies vaccination, call Antonio Animal Hospital at (949) 858-0949.

For further information about Rabies prevention and requirements, contact Orange County Animal Care at (714) 935-6848.
